My 6-year-old son, currently repeating Grade R, is not a big socialite. He took ages to make friends last year and now they've gone on to Grade 1 and he is having to start all over again. His teacher has helped by suggesting a playdate with another child in his class, which I've arranged for next week (the child will come home with us because his mom works full time). But I'm nervous already -- it's going to be the whole afternoon, from 12.30 till 5, and my son tends to withdraw after too much contact. I guess I can't change his personality but I wish I could get him to interact for more extended periods. Any advice?

When my younger son was smaller, he struggled to spend a whole afternoon at home with a friend too. In our case he simply ended up not inviting friends home very often, but he did make friends at school. I am sure you've thought of it, but I would suggest maybe include an outing in the visit - even to the local park. Just helps to break the time into chunks.
