Hideous Maternity Wear !!!

What in the world are Retail Buyers thinking when considering Maternity wear – why should we look different? Why should our clothing have such hideous prints – we’re normal people who just happen to have extra bulge – we’re not older. Have you seen the prints and styles they have, Mr Price ? Edgars ? Woolworths ? Tums and Tots. I’m a modern pregnant women !!!

Your thoughts and views ??

There are some specialist shops that have lovely, modern clothes. But if you ask me, the best thing is to invest in one of those belly band things and wear your normal pants under your bulge.

ha ha, i totally agree with you, its as if the prints on the clothes scream out "look at me, look at me!!!". Really now, these retailers need to get their act together. That why i just buy bigger sizes, and have them tailored where necessary.

Hello there, I am not pregnant so I haven't been shopping for maternity wear, I suppose once you start shopping for maternity wear one will realise how little is out there.

But there is some nice shops with very nice maternity wear when we were shopping for my sister the other day, plenty of that clothes I would buy even if I am not expecting, shop in Cedar square, Four ways Crossing and in Santon City is. Elegant and modern.

I was also in the shops over the weekend and I saw some nice maternity wear at Woolworths no funny colours and pretty much the same cut and colours as the rest of there clothes, I almost mistaken it for every day wear that is how I found it.

I didn't know Mr Price sells maternity wear?

I am sure you will find something, or like parent24ed say definitly invest in belly band things, all my friends had one and I am sure it saved them loads.

Good luck!!

Thank you, we're in Cape Town :-)

Have resorted to other alternatives - Woolworths is not all that bad, but there is room for improvement.

Good luck to you too......

Try Cherry Melon. I preferred their website when they had photos rather than sketches - I used to order my clothes from them online, based on the photos alone and they were all fine.

I hear what you saying about maternity clothing (we still TTC), and I've checked out some websites, my thing is though that I'm not a 'standard' size so buying online scares me.
Good luck

I also got the majority of my maternity wear from Cherry Melon. Their clothes are comfortable but stylish and tailored enough that you don't have to feel like you're wearing a tent or your husband's over-sized shirts.

And I agree - some of the Woolies stuff is hideous! Their preggy jeans look like throw-backs to the stone-washed 80's! But I did get a good pair of black and pin-striped slacks there. I must admit that I can't wait for buttons and zips again!

Yes you are totally correct. By the way today such type of dresses are available where you can have fashionable maternity wears.

I have to agree about the chain stores, they just have no clue!! They must hurry up and get with the freakin times!! I tried a couple places, Meoli, Cherry Melon and Bellyssimo. I liked Bellyssimo's clothing best as they fitted well and look seriously sexy on!! :). You can shop online on all 3 websites, but try Bellyssimo.

Just for the record. I tried the Belly Band and I must say that are not for everyone. I have never felt so uncomfortable in my life. The nice thing about the clothes I bought is that I can wear them afterwards. So if I look at this, it was definitely a good buy. Applause

I only saw this now. Was busy complaing about the lack of DECENT maternity wear. I wasn't aware that you could buy clothes online, but will give it a bash.

Hi,

I am also finding it hard to find anything. It's also quite difficult to buy online seeing that you never know how it will fit on you once you actually put it on. I have in the meantime resorted to wearing size medium normal tops and have them stretch over my tummy.

Who told designers that when you are pregnant you need bigger leg space and longer and wider arms? SERIOUSLY! I wear a size 8 and finding it REALLY difficult to find ANYTHING. All the sizes start at 36......

I know exactly what you mean. Or you go to Tums and Tots and their small is like a size 38!! I am also a size 8. I found the Bellyssimo stuff fitted really well. They also exchange or refund and that was my concern + they told me I could send measurements if I was worried. As freaky as it is, buying online seems safer than buying from a chain store!! Go figure. Where u from Megan? Also an 'outlying' area?

Oh I just saw you from P.E (Blonde!). Maybe check on their website if they have an outlet then you don't have to worry :). Just wish that Edgars, woolies etc. kept stuff like that. And they say maternity wear has advanced! Yeah right.

Hi Megan. I think I saw an outlet in P.E on the Bellyssimo website. So there is a maternity wear shop there.
I have been doing the bigger size thing too but they didn't fit for long and started getting really tight over my tummy. I also ended up buying online and wasn't as bad as I thought as their stuff fits pretty well and is all stretchy.

I HAVE to agree...
I am 21 weeks now and NOTHING fits me... Still pretty depressing!!

Woolies has nice Summer stuff, but edgars is absolute crap, they never seem to change their stock.
Bellysimo is stunning, but you cant exactly go and buy a whole new wardrobe in one go!!

I have decided to just live in the pool this summer, I think its the only place I will be cool and comfy!!
