I taught my son that if he really wanted to he could swear in the pub with his mates but it was not acceptable to swear in front of a lady - including me his mother. He is 21 and I have never heard him swear. He cannot believe how many girls use bad language and as a gentle man he finds this totally off-putting. Monkey see monkey do so start behaving parents.

As a teenager I went through a phase of swearing because I thought .......well I don't know what I thought. I knew it was not in good taste but continued till a friend spoke to me about it. Since then I've been in the army, been an active adult and always find swearing offensive, whether by a man or woman. Saying it is ok to swear when you are an adult makes me lose respect for you as an adult - as an adult you should have self control and a better concept as to what is acceptable language. But I suppose it will always depend on your upbringing, your social circle and sense of social behaviour.

We fined our son R5 - R10 for every time we heard him swear. At the end of the month when his pocket money was deposited into his bank account he was shocked - didn't have enough to go to movies etc during the month. He hardly swears anymore. (Well not in front of us anyway).
