I have a tatoo on my lower back. I had it done when I was 22. I don't regret it but I do wonder what I'll tell my daughter when she's a little older (13 mths now). I know that I will tell her that I was over 21 and she'll need to be over 21 before she gets any tatoos.
My parents were initially shocked but got over it after a few days.
My husband doesn't have any tatoos but likes mine :)

Ignorance, and personal prejudice - those are the only reasons for not getting tattooed. And some good, healthy, personal attacks thrown in just to get the point across.
Kids are completely self-centred, mostly only thinking about themselves. If you've had a tattoo forever, they won't say/think anything about it. They have plenty of things which concern themselves to talk about. :) Seriously, whatever they're exposed to, they consider the norm. Hopefully by exposing them to the 21st century, you save them from a fate some of these forum readers have found themselves in.
Tattoos in CT? I see Kevin's Kustom Tattoos has opened in De Waterkant. I had mine done by Kevin himself in Durban, about 20 years ago. He was the only person doing custom work. Stunning stuff. He's not involved in the shop anymore, but he trained the staff, and I've heard good things about them over the years. If I was looking (read could afford) another one, I'd drop in there first, chat with them, take a look at their designs, show them yours, etc.

There's a big difference between getting a tattoo in your youth..and getting one in your 50's! If one of my parents had a tatoo as a memento of their wild youth i don't think it would be an issue. If on the other hand my 50 year old mom decided to get one now I would seriously die of shame :) so if you want one, go ahead - your kids won't judge you, they'll just be aware that mom was once an actual person with a personality ( shock, horror!) as opposed to boring old mom :)

We have 2 kids - duaghter 7 and son 4.

My wife has 3 tattoos, I have 0.

My daughter loves my wife's tats, my son is a bit more like me :)

Thing is, what you do, put on you, where you live and what job you have, does not define you as a parent, a person or anything else. If you want to get a tattoo, go for it :)

Have you ever asked yourself why tattoos are called 'tramp stamps'.

If the cap fits, wear it!

Ja, be like everyone and go get a tat! Maybe a nice unicorn, or hey, what about originality itself: a dolphin or butterfly! Or some oriental script that you can't read! Ha ha ha ha. I bet you want one on your lower back, right - a tramp stamp? Ha ha ha. If you want to be original, try NOT having one!

I remember that tattoos were very popular before the sixties (men only). By the seventies these tattoos looked like blobs of ink and the "scum" connotation was heavily attached to it. Then it became popular again (now the ladies joined in).

Three things about tattoos are a given:

- it will look worse for wear as time goes by.
- it is permanent.
- it will go out of fashion again.

Tats are great works of art. I dont have any problem with someone that has a tatoo. The problem is I cant be with someone that has one. And you thought you have problems!

three points : 1) i confess i don't like tats, but esp big visible ones. a small tat in very secret place that only your lover and perhaps the doctor will ever see can be very sexy. i'm thinking of the places your kids will not easily see either as they grow up and become more aware. I suspect that parents with tats are more likely to get pressured by their kids into getting inked themselves. Are you ready for that challenge Mom? 2) the fact that you are worried about the kids who will arrive later in life suggests that you are not fully ready, so i suggest leave it for now. 3) you worked hard for your degree and think you know how you will feel like a real blast of fun and a big emotional catharsis after you get it. Well i suggest you wait until after you have calmed down...feel what getting your degree is really like for a few months and then if you really, really must get perm. inked then start to think again about taking the step.

Gee its amazing that all the people who are against tattoos get lambasted here. I wonder why that is? Maybe a little bit of regret on the part of those who did get tattoos? Dunno. I don't have any and am now so glad about it, because these days every tom dick or harry has one, and they all have 'meaning'. They were cool back in the days when they were different and fewer people had them, but I'm afraid that today, they are so last century. But there's no changing your mind, so live with them now people! And by the way, as long as the comment is on topic, it is valid. Even this one - you may not agree but that is your opinion, its still a valid comment.

[quote=ToniJ]I also cant believe that people are still so narrow minded to think getting a tattoo suddenyl makes you trash or low class. (Fristly...they are EXPENSIVE! lol. so not just any commoner can have them)

We are still SO third world here. when i lived in the UK (first world country) i would go to meetings with CEO's of massive corporations and they would have full sleeve tatts, tattoos on their necks etc.

Its a form of decoration and we all have our own personal preferences and having a tattoo doesnt suddenly change your IQ or your social standing.

I have 4 tattoos and 2 are in VERY visible places. but they all mean something. I am a 30 year old female with a very good career and still studying to better myself. I am not common. I am not stupid! I had my first one done when i was 19 and after 11 years STILL dont regret it.

I dont like wearing pink clothes...and some people do. so..i like tattoos and some people dont. whatever. we have our own free will and if anyone chooses to permanantly mark themselves. thats really up to them and i say GO FOR IT!

Thank you for your comment and i could not say it any better! I have 3 tattoos and WILL get more done. Because we are parents and have tattoos does not make us any less of a parent. All my tattos have meanings too and would not change it for the world. i am in a corporate company and i am studing, being a tattood woman does not make us trashy or stupid - i agree!

Dear Toni. The mere fact that you think that because a tattoo is expensive that makes it classy, shows just how common you are. Class has very little to do with money

yes you are right, people with tattoos are in a class of their own. We choose to decorate our bodies diff to what you would want to, in the end of the day. We do not judge people, unlike you judge us.

hmmm. the people with tattoos do not seem to be judging those without, yet most of those without seem to be extremely judgemental of those that do. What kind of people does that make them, I wonder, what kind of personality will they instil into their kids ? Definitely not what I would call good role models............

Yes, go with Manuella at Wildfire if you can. She does all of mine, as well as my husband's.

We have three kids, and one on the way, and several degrees between us. My take on it is that I really don't want to have narrow-minded people in my life anyway, so their views just don't count!

I have had tattoos for over 20 years. Don't regret it for one second. However if you have any doubt - don't do it. Tattoos really are for life. Don't do it for a fashion statement or because your friend has one. Do it because its for you.
