Greetings to all,

Our gorgeous little boy doesn't seem to want to sleep during the day, mom is having a hard time trying to get him down for his sleep, and as soon as she think's he's sleeping, and put him down he wakes up crying.

We know he's not hungry because as soon as mom picks him up he quietens down, problem is mom cant have him on her hip or trying to get him down the whole day, time consuming as you can imagine.

Any suggestions as to how we can get the little guy to sleep during the day?

I have read somewhere that young babies get day & night confused. Maybe try darken his room, by closing the curtains. Swaddling also helps!

Good luck!

I'm thinking, maybe don't try to get him to sleep? If he will lie happily in his carry cot or pram, looking around then why not leave him to relax until he complains? Or get him into a sling, then he can sleep or be awake but Mom still has her hands free.

Try playing music to you little one. I have one specific song on my cell phone I play to my baby girl when she does not want to fall asleep throughout the day - it works every time. Try all types of music (from rock to classical) until you find the song that helps your little one fall asleep.

It's been a while since you posted your question and i hope that your little one has figured out when and how to fall asleep :) I want to reply though, just in case there are other desperately over tired mothers out there.

At such a young age, you can only expect a baby to be demanding, but there are a few things that you can do to help foster good sleeping habits. You have to effectively "teach" your baby to fall asleep on his or her own. I am a mom and i understand how tempting it is when they are so small to rock them to sleep, but you really are only creating more work for yourself and less sleep in the long run for everyone concerned.

Babies as young as this should not be awake for longer than 45mins at a time and should sleep for around 3 hrs when they do go down. Allowing or encouraging them to be up longer than this will only over stimulate them and make it more difficult for them to fall asleep. A good way to make sure you don't let your baby become over stimulated is to be very watchful around the 45min mark - at the first sign of a yawn, you know it's bed time. Make sure that baby is burped and has a clean nappy on and then swaddle your baby snugly. Sing them a lullaby, or rock them for 3 or 4 mins and then place them in their crib drowsy but awake! (i know this sounds crazy, but you will be amazed at how quickly they learn that it is sleep time). If baby fusses, leave him or her for up to 5 mins. If your baby starts to cry, pick him or her up immediately and soothe (cuddle/rock) until they are calm enough to go to sleep again - but are not actually asleep! Just repeat this until baby falls asleep on their own in the crib.

This method might seem like wishful thinking, but it is tried and tested and is really the very best thing you can do for yourself and your baby in those early days. There are numerous books and websites that promote this method of putting baby to bed. I think that there is a widely available book in South Africa called Sleep Sense and they too encourage parents of young babies to use this method and expound on it even more.

This do really work! Believe me, it is the best gift you can give your child - and yourself. I did this with my son (now 6), and he can sleep anywhere when I tell him it is sleep time. And because he does not fight it, he actually tells me when he wants to go to sleep. Very important as well is that they sleep in their own rooms/beds to get uninterrupted sleep...

Music always worked for my nephew. You leave him until he is really tired. And then the BeeGees for babies comes on and before you know, he's out! Good luck :)

Hi there,

Babies sleep better in darken environments. There's a product called Snoozeshade, which is brilliant for helping babies sleep during the day when one's out and about. It basically is a black out blind cover over prams and strollers. It protects from sun rays and insects too. And its totally breathable. It really helps if your at home and wanna push your baby to sleep, just cover the pram and the darkened environment will assist your baby to sleep :) You can buy these at Calora.
