Do anyone know if there is any medical aid scheme that will only put children on. My story is complicated... I am re-married, has two children from a previous marriage. Me and my husband is on army medical, but my kids aren't allowed to be on there, because they are not his kids, unless he adopts them and my ex will never allow this. Now I want a medical aid for them, but every company I've contacted say there must be a primary member. I just want my kids on the medical - it will be useless to put myself on, because I have medical. Now, what must I do or who can I contact in a case like this? My ex don't want to get medical for them - he says he can't afford it.

hi single / divorced parents face an uphill battle in all sorts of areas
i have one night every alternate weekend [a saturday]

try accessing holiday accomadation; most insist on a 2 or 3 night weekend
and you cant get the special sunbreaks or prokard benefits

there are kids travel websites etc
but they dont cater for limited care parents who would love extra time
but the court has ordered minimal access

even if luck enough to get into a resort/hotel
you pay a premium as it is a single night
and must pay for 2 adults [even if 1 adult and 1 child]

you get to check in at 2 pm
and must be out by 11 am
just enough time to get your kid bathed , dressed, breakfasted, bags packed
and if lucky enough 30 minutes in the pool

sunday is the day you would be able to enjoy
but your out...

I would suggest you challenge the Army Medical Aid - the children by default are his dependents because they live with him - and he should be allowed to load them on his medical aid. You do not need to be natural father for a child to be your dependent... look at also having your husband declared a legal gaurdian - this also gives him right to have kids on his medical aid...

Any child may join an open medical scheme but will be listed as the principal member, and each child will join seperately as principal. Find a qualified, accredited medical scheme broker - check out medicalschemes.com - and ask about Discovery Health's KeyCare Plus product. you have one of two options; the Core option refers to a hospital plan only, or the Plus option that offers some day to day medical as well. The nice thing about this product is; (1) it is income based so your children will not pay exhorbintant fees, and (2) it does not have an annual overall limit.

The other option would be for your current husband to be named either the guardian of your children, or to adopt your children legally. That way the SANDF medical may not refuse them membership (probably the cheapest option, though you will have to go through the courts to have the necessary, legal papers...

Unfortunatley Medical Aids don't always cater very well for modern day family structures.
The only option I can think of off-hand is to change medical aid's yourself and go onto a private scheme with your children as your dependants. Try looking at schemes like Oxygen (where you only pay premiums on the first child - second is free) might help you save a few rands.

Good Luck.

Hi there, children are allowed onto their own medical aid under special circumstances, but they will pay adult rates.. E mail me on mornek832@gmail.com and I will get hold of you and see if I can help you.

First thing stop leaching off your ex with maintenance! Second, you become the primary member and add your children as dependants, simple.

I am the primary member. My live in partner (not married) and his children, as well as mine ( we do not have children together ) are all on my medical aid as dependants. I would also challenge the medical aid.

I have become a legal guardian to my late mother-in-laws two kids.
Their father has left them in our care and I got a letter from court stating that I am
the legal guardian and handed it over to the medical aid and have not had any problems adding them
to the medical aid.

I am on the Permanent Force Medical Continuation Fund and had my step daughter placed on my medical with no problems. She stays with us but her father is still her legal guardian. You just need to speak to the right people and submit proof of her residence, avidavits, permission from the legal guardian, letter from the school etc.

Suggest that you contact the Counsel for Medical schemes. To the best of my knowledge if your children are totally dependent on you and their step father the medical aid cannot waiver membership for them.

yes, same as some of the info above. join a private medical aid and add the children as dependents.
I did the following to save some money. my wife is at home looking after the kids. Discovery KeyCare PLus is income based. so I just split our medical aid with me being a principle member and my wife being a principle member as well. complete an affidavit as the police to state proof of income (which is 0 or my wife) and we added the children under her and saving lots of money ever since! hope this can help someone out there!
just make sure of the fine print. Im still on a Essential Delta core hospital plan but wife and kids now on KeyCare Plus and its costing them only R642 per month! Im paying R718, but if I were to go on KeyCare plus I would have paid over a R1000 per month and then if my wife and kids were added as dependants on the same plan we would have paid far over R2000 per month. anyway some food for thought.
I went through all our expenses and saved so much money that my wife could have stopped working and look after the kids. ok - we also cut down on a few expenses etc...

You need to look at your priorities. Your kids should come first and they need medical aid. Get yourself on a medical aid for the sake of your kids.
