We spoke to my wife's specialist on Monday - and he's of the opinion (and actually does it himself) that a hospital plan (either Liberty or Discovery) is all you need.
You then take the difference between a 'normal' medical aid and the hospital plan, and put that (strictly!!!!) into a savings account every month, using those funds to pay the day-to-day doctors' visits and prescriptions.
You'll save a lot of money - in our own case, we will be saving about R4000-00 per month, for a 4-person family.
Having had a good look at the numbers, I cannot find a single good reason NOT to use a hospital plan and get rid of the medical aid. In fact, last year alone we would have saved ourselves something in the region of R20,000-00 - MORE than enough for a nice family holiday. Over the last 10 years, taking into account inflation and even accounting for all the serious health emergencies we experienced as a family during that period, we would have been able to more than halve our bond with what we would have saved!
Wisdom in retrospect, I suppose... but going forward, I know ONE medical aid that isn't being renewed come January 2012...
What does a medical aid provide you with that you can't get cheaper for cash or (alternatively) through a hospital plan? Unless you have some really SERIOUS problems in your family, I can't fathom it.
And anybody can have a hospital plan.
