Hi there,

We are in the process of adopting. We have been "waiting" for two months now. We have spoken to quite a few people and most them had the whole process done in 2 months or less. From starting the process to having their little baby in their arms.

We have no race preferance. We would love a little girl 6 months or under. Is it normal to take this long? It feels like I have to fight and beg and plead every day for someone to do something. We keep hearing "when a baby becomes available....." I have visited a local "baby home" and they have more than 10 babies waiting to be adopted. That is just one home.

I would love to hear from those of you who have adopted and how long the process took. Or any advise on what we can do. We just really want our little baby.

Thank you
Prospective Adopter

Hello

We are embarking on the adoption process ourselves. We had our first meeting with Johannesburg Child Welfare yesterday. I'm sorry to say but you are being unrealistic if you think you can adopt within two months. We waited two months just for the first appointment / introductory meeting with the social workers. I understand that the process takes anything between six months (at the earliest) and a year. Remember that there are a whole lot of legal hoops that you need to jump through. When a child is put up for adoption the welfare agency first needs to go to court and get the child made a ward of the State. The birth mother then has two months to change her mind - and that's just the beginning of the court process. Plus there are medical tests that need to be conducted, counselling, psycological assessments, home visits, references, criminal record / police clearance (which takes at least 6 weeks) - alot of red tape and waiting for court dates. Be prepared to wait nine months if you are lucky.

Don't give up - good luck!

Hi there,

You are right. There are loads of things that need to happen just to get approved. I guess I should've been clearer. I meant two months since getting approved.

I also don't think it is unrealistic as I know of quite a few people who had the whole process done from first visit with social worker to taking baby home. That does not of course include the 60 days waiting once baby has been placed. Few recently discovered a collegue who adopted and was placed with a baby 2 weeks after being approved. Their whole process took 7 weeks.

I do realise though that it could take longer. We have been approved for more than two months have still not been matched. As I mentioned previously there are many babies available. We have since been made aware that the hold up is our social worker. She does think an abandoned baby - especially from a different race - is "a good fit for us" because there are too many unknowns.

Thank you for your response. Good luck on your journey.

In 2004 they told us at CMR 4 years. At Abba 2 years. We went to PROCARE in 2005, and our 1st Adoption took 8 months, 2nd Adoption in 2007, 3 weeks. It differs, lot of paper work, approval, availability of Babies, etc depends on the time frame...
Sometimes a birth mom would get 3 profiles to look thru, other times up to 7 so you could be passed because there a to many profiles to choose from...
Also it could be there is only 2 or 3 birth moms at that moment in the safe houses. A lot of things happens that we are not aware of. just enjoy this last few months together because once the baby is in da house! no more alone time for a while Angel
