A friend of mine has decided to take her daughter out of school and home school her with art courses and so on. Is anybody home schooling their children? I'm curious about how well a teenager would listen to their parent as their teacher.

I can't say that what your friend is doing is wrong. It is after all her child we are talking about. But, this might not be of the best interest of the kid. She might not be given the education she needs to help her when she becomes an adult. I don't how well her daughter would listen to her and I don't know if there are still parents that home school their kids. If there are any, they are only just few of them. Have your friend thought about military school for girls? If your friend was unsatisfied with her kids previous school then changing her school would be best. Military school for girls is created for them to learn the lessons of personal sacrifice and growth that are taught in a military setting. I think this will be better than home schooling. :)

Guest - you are SOOOO uninformed! There are thousands of parents that homeschool with excellent results. In today's day and age, it is probably better to homeschool your children than to allow them to be subjected to all kinds of immoral influences. As much as I believe in allowing children to experience life, there are life skills that I would like to teach them and not leave it up to the unreliable school system...

@Guest,

My daughter is currently homeschooling to complete her Grade 12. She was in a Technical school up to 2009 (Grade 11) afterwhich we decided that the way forward is to homeschool. She was headgirl and cheerleader captain, thus the desicion did not come easy.

This only happened after much thought and research though. The homeschooled kid needs a bit more self discipline, for sure, but once they settle into the system, meet new friends that have similar interests and can share experiences about homeschooling, then they shine. The system is very easy to follow and work is up to date. Homeschooled kids have access to a huge amount of information using the homeschooling website, and they also have access to a lot of exam papaers that have been archived.

It teaches them to be self motivated with no spoonfeeding. In my opinion they grow into healthy, responsible adults quicker than the kids in governmental schools. I have a son that I am planning to take down the same path, as I already see at this early stage of high school that the schools interest in other activities like sport, far exceeds the interest in education. My son needs to have balance, and he is not getting this at the moment. Taking him to another goverment school will only have the same results, i.e. they will have another priority.

Homeschool your child, give him/her a real chance in life.

Homeschooling is moving on the very front edge. It is on the front of educational change.

We are doing homeschooling for almost 12 years and it only gets better.
Our children take online classes (some on skype) from the best teachers available!
There are no restrictions (except financially) on which courses to choose from.

They take Math, Science, Literature, Computer Science, Logic, Latin and the rest. They can pick and choose courses and would soon do a couple of Advanced Placement Courses. There are thousands and thousands of homeschooling families in Northern America, not to mention all the support groups, warehouse size bookstores, online schools. It gets sometimes overwhelming if you do not know what you are aiming for.

The whole educational front is changing so much with the flat world we are living in, that schools become really more and more outdated. Who can move a big ship in a flash moment? It takes years for schools to change policies and curriculum . Go in peace with your homeschooling, you wont regret it.

We successfully homeschool 2 teenagers with the Cambridge system. They will achieved a flurry of A* for their IGCSE subjects, including advanced math, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, accounting. (19 million students write these exams worldwide). Our children are well adjusted and happy teenagers unaffected by peer pressure or peer hangups. They are competitive sportsmen, have taken extra mural drama and music classes. They have a very normal teenage social life with most of their friends attending school. Homeschooling is not for sissy's and homeschooling teenagers takes extreme commitment from the entire family. But we are preparing our children for a well adjusted entry into adulthood - without spoon-feeding them or teaching to an exam - their success is 100% acredited to their own effort and dedication -an invaluable life-skill.

Please tell me which company you're homeschooling through. I'm currently doing grade 9 through Clonard, but they don't go further than grade 9 so I'll need to find another option for next year. Thanks.
