Bank on R3000/month or LESS and they get cheaper up to school going age then it sky rockets. If you spending more then you have either to much money and don't care or you just like to spend. I see medcial aids of R600/month..???? full time nannies....so yes these are people who are loaded...if you like the rest of us then R3000-less will be fine.

This is a very helpful topic, thanks for all the comments. Does anyone have a live in nanny by any chance? How much on average do you pay them? And in terms of weekends off, do you give them a certain number of days off? I am not planning to take my baby to creche for the 1st year or so, so would like to work that into my budget...

What life? dying alone in a old age home ? leaving all you have worked for you whole life to the anc ?

If I see how much my parents need me in their old age I am glad they had me
I can emagine leavng them in the care of some striking nurse who would only abuse them.

Anyways you make you bed as they say not for me to tell you what to do .

Wow! This is an eye opener for me! I knew babies were expensive, but it's strange to see that the majority is spent on day-care or a full-time nanny! I guess grandparents are cheaper then..
Still, it was great reading just how much is spent on what.
Goodluck to you all!

Ah, Money. I remember that......

The biggest thing you have to worry about is going on maternity leave and relying on UIF.
Simply put, dont rely on UIF.

People claiming they spend R600 + on formula for 1 month has VERY thirsty babies or are buying VERY expensive formula. We buy 2 x BIG tins NAN (which last for more than a month - baby is 9 months and only drinks milk) at normal grocery stores for less than R300... Why did some of the parents above decide to have children if it's so expensive, time consuming and unpleasant?

Oh I see! You trying to be funny! Yes, you have an amazing life. I would also like to spend my day looking through forums that have nothing to do with me...and then comment on them saying how great my life is.

You must be a busy guy :)

I am a parent with a full day nanny - but I am not loaded for sure! I just spend wisely and cut were needed. In the first 2 months my child used mostly all of my nieces / nephews clothes. I returned a lot of his gifts for vouchers which I still use now for when he needs something new. And there is absolutley no problem buying the cheaper versions of cots / prams / seats. They work just as well - minus the name brands.

Game has a beautiful Disney range which is very reasonable and Baby city always have specials on their nappies and wipes.

What toiletries does babies need ?

I have two children and never buy them any besides toothpaste and some shampoo
and that is far from 300 bucks !

Wow. Baby = R3 000 pm (on average). And that's BEFORE it grows up and the demands for more expensive toys, plus schooling, plus outings, etc increase. I'll stick to my dog - endless joy, love and affection. No back-chatting, never grumpy, never ever tells me he hates me because he can't have another Beeno - and he costs about R200 pm. Plus, I am not contributing to the ever growing population.

Gr8 idea trying to find out before hand, my husband and I decided that we have about an extra R 3000.00 a month and it was the right time for a baba... When gogga arrived Surprise!!!

But don't stress you will always find another place to cut out when baby needs an extra during the month!

My son is now 16 months old.

Just remember that every cent you spend on the little one will be worth it a million time over every time you look at them!!!

Day Care - R 2 000.00
Nappies - R 600.00 (3xHuggies Gold & 1 Pull-Ups, because he pees through everything else!)
Wipes - R 120.00
Toiletries - R 100.00
Medical aid - R 350.00
Food & snacks - R 750.00 (No more purity, but he is a very healthy eater!)
Milk - R 500.00
Clothing - R 500.00
Toys - R 200.00
Total - R 5 120.00

My son my every thing, and you clearly don't know that is worth every cent on earth just to hold your baby in your arm!

A smile is worth more than the universe!

Does it still seem like we are the one's missing out?
