Hi There,
My daughter is turning 10 in April, and is quite hairy on the legs. What age is recommended for a girl to start shaving? She is not showing any direct signs of puberty, however is going through the physical changes.

Girls do seem to reach puberty earlier these days. As for shaving, it's a boring duty she'll be stuck with forever, so unless she's self-conscious about the hair, I'd say it can wait.

I agree. In my opinion they should still be playing and wear playclothes, they should not be worried about what they look like. Does she feel self-conscious? And if so, find out why. Is she being teased at school? Or just in herself. This might be a good opportunity to talk to her about self esteem and self acceptance, that looks isn't what really matter (even though we do take care of ourselves). But if the hair doesn't bother her (yet) leave the shaving for as long as possible.

The decision should be hers not yours, you should let her come to you and ask if she can start shaving in which case let her....

When I was about the same age, I was teased horribly by other children in my class. I was also a swimmer so it didnt help.

While my mom always encouraged me to be confident and proud, but it didnt stop the fact that the teasing was affecting me.

My mom allowed me to shave my legs. I can remember the huge relief and not feeling so self conscious.

If it is because she is being teased, and it were my daughter, I would let her, but perhpas waxing is a better option as it keeps the hair away longer.

I have to support Bluue-bee. I was in st 6 and had not shaved yet, and of course the other girls and boys teased me terribly. I once asked my mom if I can shave my legs and she said no. (I had such a supporting, understanding mother that to this day I do not like sharing anything with her) I then one day just had enough of it and shaved by myself - it turned into a terrible mess as I literally shaved the skin off my shins. Of course this caused more laughs at school and my mom was mad at me. I want to say if she wants to shave - get her her own shaving set with all the gels etc and "help" her do it the first couple of times so she does not end up like me. Shaving is hard to do and I even nick myself to this day. May be waxing will be better, if it wont be to sore for her, but give her some Parasetamol before you go, may be it will help not to feel it so bad. Please be a better understanding mother than mine.

Hi MiMom

I think all of us will say a different age. I only started when I started High School. My daughter start's High School next year, and she said she want to wait until then. (May I add that she is also very hairy on her legs). She said that she is ok with it and no-one ever said anything to her about it. All her friends are going to start shaving when they turn 13 or when they start High School.

My stepdaughter started shaving when she was 11 years old. She said she was teased at school. All her friends shave.

I think it is the group of kids they mix with and then it is up to them. I am sure that she will ask you if she want to start. If she does not have a problem with it, then you should also not have a problem with her "hairy" legs.

Good Luck

10 is a bit young... I don't think girls even care about hairy legs at that stage? Although today's kids as so much different from when we were kids... V just turned 12 and I think she asked me about a year ago if she could shave. I didn't see a problem with that as her legs do look better shaven and I'm sure it's more comfortable.. I don't know hey, I would say, go with your gut feeling.. It's usually quite spot on..

Hi there, I'm in the same situation. My daughter is 10 but has already had three cycles of her period (shame poor child) and I have allowed her to use a hair removal creeam for under her arms as the hair was rather dark and long and she wears sleeveless often so I didnt want her to get teased. I have not allowed the leg shaving yet as I feel the hair on her legs may be long, but is not very dark and I would like her to hold off on the shaving for as long as possible, but she is starting to complain about it and saying it embaresses her. I'm going to have to relent very soon especially as she is showing such dramatic puberty signs, but I really wanted to try and keep her a little girl for as long as possible - her body has other ideas!

Hi, I let my 11 year old use Veet on her legs. There is an applicator which you use to sort of "shave" the cream off, this gives them the practise of how to hold a razor and how hard to press without the bloodshed!!
I had no choice but to let her remove the hair as it is dark and long. Funnily enough she has not yet had a period nor does she have hair under her arms. She does have hairy legs and well developed breasts though.
Hugs. xx
