In response to the article on your site about what to tell my children about what's happening in Japan. My son has just turned 4, and came home from school yesterday with information about "a giant wave which could cover the whole world". Upon further enquiry it became apparent that the head of department in his pre-school had held a general discussion about the happenings in Japan and the Tsunami, wanting to collect funds to donate to the cause. I do believe the intentions to be noble, however I question the rationale of informing young toddlers of the current happenings particularly given the upcoming vacations and specifically my family holiday to KZN. My son is quite concerned about this giant wave and I feel that such information should be shared at my discretion and not that of the teacher in a general forum. Do you believe I am over-reacting?

I do think it would have been more appropriate for the school to talk to the parents about donations than to the kids. But having said that, this news has been so ubiquitous, there was very little chance your child wouldn't hear something about it. Tricky one, hopefully your little ones has moved on by the time you get to the beach. Hope you have a great holiday!
