Right, so I was driving home with my four and six year old last night when I listened how their casual banter turned to the subject of babies.

The conversation went a little like this:
Kid 1: "So, is it true that babies are built in your tummy? Are they then born out of your tummy?"
Kid 2: "Yes, that's where all the magic happens!"
Kid 1: "But babies can't come out of your mouth hey?"
Kid 2: "No, sis man, that's just gross... EEUUWWWW!"
Kid 1: "And they'll pee in your mouth, hey?"
Kid 2: <making noises of disgust>
Kid 2: "But that's OK, because there's a toilet in your tummy so they can wee in there..."

Er... I almost rolled the car!

Anyway, this is OBVIOUSLY the time to formally introduce the birds and the bees. My husband and I always make a point of being open about these kind of subjects - while being age appropriate of course - but our conversations have so far only really been limited to respecting your body and privacy, keeping your body safe and the basics of where babies grow and how they are born. But we clearly need to up our game here!

They DO love learning things from books and can spend hours reading together. So, the question is: Which books on babies and sex education do you recommend for a boy and girl aged four (and a half) and six?

I need advice!!!

I don't think they are old enough to understand any of the more grown-up terms. Yes, they will speculate about what is REALLY happening when babies arrive, but I don't believe that is a cue to actually teach them what it is all about. They simply cannot understand the concept, so why confuse them? Let them believe for a little while still in how they think it happens. The right age will come soon enough.

I explained by tellling them there is a special place like a little nest in the mother next to her tummy, but not in her tummy. They ussually get that. I heard of one little boy watching a pregnant woman eat and becoming more and more stressed. When his mother ask what's wrong, he said all the food that the woman is eathing is falling on the baby's head.
