What do I do with my son. He will be 5 in September 2011. He can either go to Grade R at school next year or Grade R at creche. I was advised to keep him in creche because he is a sensitive child and he might not cope in Grade R at school emotionally. What should I do?

I would send him to school. Get him used to his new surroundings.

You as parent would however need to provide lots of support. Kids are much stronger than we think. Even though he might be sensitive, I am convionced that with parenting support and love, you can make it work.

Good luck.

My daughter turns 6 in November this year. She is currently in Gr R at her creche. It really doesn't matter when or how you put your child in Gr R just make sure that the Gr R at the current creche is accreditted with the education department. also ask the local school close to the creche if the kids they received from the creche are up to date and if they have any problems with them.

hope it helps...

Thanks for the reply guys. I have handed in the application at the school, lets hope he is accepted because we do not fall into their feeder area. I just think its crazy to have feeder areas, if parents wake up late to apply for their kids, they have to take what is left. But anyway, lets see how it turns out :(

i know you've already applied to the school but I just wanted to add my experience. My son is also very sensitive and he's shy and slow to get used to new situations so for exactly those reasons he did Grade R at the school he was going to go to. We wanted him to get used to his new surroundings so that everything wasn't such a huge change in Grade 1. Also we wanted him to have built friendships with the children he would be at school with. He is now in Grade 1 and letting him do Grade R at the same school rather than at creche was best for him.

I would send him to Grade R at the school. When my son started nursery at 2.5 he adjusted beautifully. but when we had to change schools the follwoing year it took him almost 6 months to adjust, as the kids at the new school had already forged friendships the year before.
so we made the decision to send him to Grade R at the new school so that he would feel more comfortable and not feel left out of friendships in grade 1. he is thriving and i am so glad we made the decision that we did.
