Ladies.. I need some advice, I heard that there are some medical aid schemes who are willing to accept you during pregnancy and pay for everything (or the most anyway). Do any of you know if this is true?

As far as I know, if you are already pregnant when joining a medical aid, there is some sort of penalty payable. But I don't know the detail.
It might be a good idea to choose a few medical aids and send them an e-mail with your queries.

Good luck!

When I was pregnant with my first baby in 2006. Medihelp accepted me when I was 4 months pregnant and they paid for everything. Check them out. I was very happy with them.

Good luck.

thank you! i'll have a look! At least I'm near George who has an amazing provincial hospital, so the crisis is actually for after the baby is born.
But if I don't need to travel to george for every little thing, that would be wonderful aswell.

I know some medical aid for pregnancy, but they are not recommending to join them while pregnant. It should be possible to join if you still not pregnant, they could gladly accept you. Anyway, some insurance companies cover the pregnancy, I just can't tell you some specific companies.

Hi Sweetlee,

I'm not sure about medical aid covering your pregnancy costs if you join while you are already pregnant - the most that I know wont. However consider joining while you are still pregnant even if they don't cover the costs of birth and pregnancy as your baby should then be accepted onto the scheme straight after birth without any underwriting which is crucial if by a small chance your child needs any sort of treatment straight after birth. If you wait to join after your child is born and say for instance your child has a treatable condition of any sort, a 12 month waiting period will be applied and the medical aid will not cover any costs related to that condition for the first year of membership. So make sure to clarify this information as well when researching your different medical aid options.

Good morning, just joined parent24.com. I am 27 weeks pregnant and just back from the UK. We researched many medical aids with no luck of getting the pregnancy covered!! We went as far as the Ombadsman (spelling??) and apparently the NHS in the UK is not deemed a medical aid scheme. We decided to join in any case as the baby will be covered from birth - my son was born at 30 weeks and in NICU for 1 month and the likely hood of another prem is a reality!
We joined DISCOVERY HEALTH. I will be giving birth in Cape Town and am looking at a Provincial Hospital too. The standard costs at Medi Clinics are pretty high...R15 000 for hospital stay, then add your Gynae, Pediatrician etc....and then factor in complications....we could be looking at about R50 000 for a C section!!!

I would love to know if you do find a Medical Aid willing to cover you.

I'm afraid I don't have good news for you. When I found out I was pregnant in May I was only 5 weeks along,I phoned every single medical aid possible and NOBODY would help me!!! Not even with a penalty,NOTHING! Apparently they say that they still did it in 2009 but their policies has changed since. And in 2010 no medical aid will cover a pre existing pregnancy.YOu can still go onto a med aid,but they will exclude pregnancy for 12 months.Altough you'll be covered for other stuff and also your baby will be covered from the day he's born.

Today I am 20 weeks,I am on a med aid,but they dont pay a cent towards my pregnancy! I pay everything in cash.I'm sorry for the bad news, but I've been there.I suggest you start phoning around for the best prices to give birth.Good luck!!!

Hi

9 weeks pregnant, also cannot find a medical aid. Will it make a difference if my boyfriend gets onto a medical aid and then ads me? Also whats the deal with the hospital insurance (like what clientele life is offering) is that worth a shot? Please help as the insurance will take me up to 12 weeks, feel like time is running out and the stress is def not good for little baby.
Thank you in advance and its awsome to have this forum

Hi Sim...Unfortunately it won't help if your boyfriend adds you to his as you are already pregnant and the medical aid will exclude your pregnancy for 12 months after joining. YOu can try hospital insurance,I guess that will help a little with the hospital costs.Although I know some of them also excludes a pre existing pregnancy. This is really sad I know! I'm currently 6months pregnant and have been fighting for 5 months to get something to happen, but I wasted my time.

I'm paying everything cash,I found the cheapest gynae I could and the cheapest private hospital (I don't want to do the govermental thing, just look at this current strike) It's really alot of money but I don't have too much of a choice. The hospital stay and the birth will cost me about R 25 000. I did join a medical aid,but my pregnancy is not covered...atleast my baby will be covered from day 1!

Good luck,I wish you all the best and a healthy pregnancy

Nix

hello all. i am 20 weeks pregnant and also could not find a medical aid that would take me. i found out that going to a hospital in a smaller community will be cheaper (half the price of joburg) but you will have to drive far and stay there a bit in advance for incase you go into labour earlier. you also need to take in consideration that if your baby need to stay in the hospital a couple of days, you will be stranded there as well. can anybody tell me what hospital in joburg has the best prices if i take that option? thanks you!!!!

HI Guest 14 sep 2010 11:41:47

You are right about the smaller communities. Im 6 months along and searched long and hard for the cheapest private hospital around.I have lovely hospitals around me,but they charge an absolute fortune. The cheapest one I could find was St Marys womens clinic in Springs on the east rand. They only do maternity and gynaecology there. It's very private and I love the choice I made. Try them if you think thats an ok option...Good luck

No medical aid will cover at this stage if you are currently pregnaut. However, they wil cover the baby as from the first minute if something goes wrong with the baby. Strange how most people would put them selves before their children.

HI there i live in Pretoria and i am 4 months pregnant. I found i very good semi private hospital in pretoria west.
its called folanteng. I tell you its really amazing considering the price and the service they provide. Both my friends
went there and they were impressed by the service. The whole idea behind this hospital is that they wanted to provide to people who didn't want government hospital but cant afford the crazy price that fully private hospital charge. You will pay less than R 5000 for normal birth and less than R 8000 for C-section but this is only hospital cost it excludes what the docter will charge you for their service but i would recoment you take a visit or find something similar in your area. The number is 012 380 1438

Hi Guest 4 November 210 12:33:37

I'm also in your boat. What you can do is contact discovery, they will take you,but exclude your pregnancy for 12 months, but baby will be covered from the day he is born.Even the cheapest discovery options. That's what I did and am so happy that I did. Good luck!!
