Hi all. I am having real trouble introducing the bottle to my 8 week old baby. She is having none of it and I am going back to work soon and need her to be able to take a bottle. Some people say that if she is hungry enough she will drink from the bottle and others say that we shouldn't force her to take it.

What is the best way? And how long does it take to get a baby onto the bottle? We have only been trying for a couple of days but the screaming response was the same both times. We persisted for a while, soothing her every few minutes. But as soon as the bottle got near her again she started screaming again. Eventually I just breastfed her as I could not listen to her cry like that any more and it just doesn't feel right to starve her into submission.

Should we just keep trying once a day? Should we try more than once a day? I hate hearing her scream but the bottle is a necessity. My husband, my mum and my father-in-law have all tried (cos I heard babies will rather take a bottle from someone other than mum at first).

Any and all suggestions welcome

Hey Nusha maybe you could try using a silicone nipple shield on your breast first? This way your baby will be introduced to the silicone nipple/teat, but still be able to breast feed. Once she's accustomed to the nipple shield, the transition to the bottle may not be as stressful.
I had to use nipples shields becuase my nipples are flat, and my baby transitioned onto the bottle without even a hiccup and I'm convinced the silcone shield had something to do with it. The Medela ones are the best and sell for about R80.

Phew good luck, this must be stressful. I've heard that some babies will more easily take milk from a spoon or a cup with a spout than from a bottle, but eight weeks seems a bit young to try that. It seems a bit harsh, but maybe you should go out so you are not there to hear the crying, then granny or dad may have better luck.

Thanks for the suggestions :-)

We went to the baby clinic today for her vaccinations and the sisters there also advocated that I should leave the house. They said its "tough love" but that it only lasts a few days and she should be fine after that ... I really hope so ...

The nipple shields are an interesting idea ... I remember that the midwife that gave us antenatal classes said not to use them if we were breastfeeding cos it could also cause nipple confusion similar to introducing a bottle too early. I will give it a try since I plan to stop breastfeeding as well ... maybe it will make the transition easier for her ...

Silicone nipple is the best one for babies. Because most babies like that Silicon nipple, and i agree Kayo suggestions. Use nipples shields becuase some nipples are flat so the shields comportable for babies to drink the milk best baby care
