My 10-month-old son has started waking up screaming at night after about 3 hours of sleep. I've been following the same routine for a couple of months now: supper around 4.30pm, bathtime around 6pm, feed and bedtime. He settles fairly well, but then wakes around 10pm screaming inconsolably for about an hour.

Nothing works: holding, rocking, feeding, paracetemol syrup in case of pain... He's tired, because the screaming only stops for him to yawn. I'm still breastfeeding and have tried feeding him (I know I shouldn't do it to get him to sleep, but I'm desperate for the screaming to stop). He'll feed, but then pulls off crying.

The first time it happened we took him to the hospital, thinking he might have an ear infection (I've recently started taking him to Aquatots). They found nothing. Then we thought it might be a night terror caused by stress from a very busy Toptots class on Saturdays, because the first two times the screaming happened were during Saturday nights. But now the screaming has happened during the week too.

Any ideas? Is this just a phase? Just when it looked like we had a fairly reasonable nighttime routine, this has started and it's really distressing.

I can't find anything amiss with your routine either. My older son did this too at a similar age, and I never found the answer, he just grew out if it. I look back now and wish I did less rocking, patting, walking and feeding - maybe he would have fallen asleep more quickly without me bothering him! Good luck, I really sympathise and know how this plays havoc with your peace of mind.

A friend (also with a 10-month-old) suggested that it might be wind - her son has been doing the same thing. Embarrassing to think it could be something so simple (I should know how to wind my baby by now), but it seems to have worked so far (cross my fingers, touch wood, etc). I make sure I get at least one wind out of him before putting him in bed, whereas before I assumed if nothing came out after a minute or two that there was nothing.

Now we're just going through a hectic teething phase with two teeth emerging at the same time... Wish someone could explain to me why the poor things have to suffer so much with their teeth.

my little one did the same at about 8.5 months. I changed her supper to porridge only & she's been much less restless at night. Yogurt or fruit for pudding seemed to be the culprits.

If there is nothing wrong according to the docs then it is probably something like wind, teething or terrors, my son suffered and my brothers kids suffered with night terrors, it is very frustrating, but it does wear off, turn the lights on and the TV and try and see if that works, if you can try and get him preoccupied with something then it is probably a night terror.
You need to distract him big time, try slamming a cupboard and snap them out of it.
