Hi everyone. I am a new mother and feel clueless about expressing milk! I have been breastfeeding my 3 week old exclusively, but because I run my own business, I need to be away from him about once a week for maybe 3 hours. My mom takes care of him during this time and I thus need to express milk for him ONLY for these occasions and only if he is hungry before I return. He feeds every 4 hours at the moment, but sometimes more often. I do not wake him to feed as I have been told to feed on demand... I really do not want to bottle feed (even if it is expressed milk, but I have no choice). Here are my 2 questions:
1. When do I express? Just after feeds or some time after? Will I still have enough milk for him if I express? I tried to express today just after morning feed without much success - there seemed to be no milk left.
2. Will he refuse the breast if I introduce the bottle so soon, even if it is just once a week?

Hi there,
My baby is 6 wks old and I try to express milk for those purposes as well. I've read every bit of info I can get my hands on for help on breast feading and expressing milk. I've been drinking jungle juice to produce more breast milk, Í'm on Eglynol as well and I've decided to buy Prolak tablets as well. What I've read on expressing is that it's best to do directly after a feed, even if you don't get much out. Express every day in the morning and store it untill you have enough for a bottle. Even if you express every couple of hours this will stimulate your breasts to produce more milk and therefore able to express more a next time. I've had a big wake-up call regarding the expressing situation. I thought that I would be able to express a bottle and store it, but alas maybe 50ml if I'm lucky. Your baby will not have a problem taking a bottle if it's only once a week or twice a week. I've bought Tommy Tippee bottles and my baby takes these bottles and my breast with no problems or fuss.

Good luck and take care.

Good luck and I hope everything goes well

I heard the best timde is an hour after a feed, by then you will have a little more milk and it gives your breasts enough time to produce more for your baby's next feed.
